Great location and some lovely walks nearby. Enjoyed the view and the peace and quiet.
J&MK– March 2023
A pleasant stay, always warm and bright at this time of year. We visited Vindolanda and the Wall of course. On our return we slept in a bed with clouds for duvets. We couldn’t really ask for more.

Wonderful house, perfect setting! Loved walking local on the Estate. Highlights – sunset/sunrise on the Estate, Lindisfarne, Cragside (a must!), Wallington, Bamburgh Castle and beach, Barter Books – Alnwick, and Hadrian’s Wall. Estate office lady – Louise – super helpful. Loved the curtains, really loved all the vibrant pottery in the house! Thank you.

GN - December 2021/January 2022
We (4) stayed in the cottage 'Alice' over the Christmas period. The location is quiet and restful. You are treated to a tranquil view of swans and other fowl on Sir Edwards Lake. There is a boathouse by the lake which we were allowed to visit. It is a lovely location to see wildlife and try to film them. The cottage is on the end of the little terrace. It has ample parking at the rear with easy access via a small gate and enclosed garden to the back door. A tap is located on the wall at the back, which proved very helpful in cleaning muddy boots or dog before entering the cottage. The cottage has a large kitchen/lounge area with a log burning stove and underfloor heating. The walls are tastefully hung with pictures. The bedrooms are spacious and warm. The main bedroom has an arched brick ceiling . The en suite bathroom has a lovely rain shower which can deliver a strong downpour. It is a spacious bathroom and a pleasure to use. The second bedroom has lovely views at the back of the property over the surrounding fields to the woods beyond. It has a separate bathroom next to it. The beds were firm but lovely to relax on or sleep on. The kitchen is fully fitted and comes with a fridge/freezer capable of storing all the food for us, needed to do the Xmas day meal. The washing machine came in useful . The cottage information folder has full instructions on how to use the items as well as a comprehensive guide to the area. The price might seem high but once you see the cottage and interior, you will see it is a fair price. We were pleased to see the owners are keen on recycling waste. If going to Belsay, try the Blacksmith Cafe. All food is freshly cooked on site and was a great find. We will be returning to Alice in the future. Summer time would be better.
MU - December 2021
We stayed here over Christmas, and I say this without hyperbole - we had the best Christmas ever. Check-in was effortless, the accommodation flawlessly clean and full of character, with not a single thing I would change. It's hard to explain how relaxing a time we had, and I feel the biggest compliment I can pay is that we WILL be back. Thank you!
SM - December 2021
The School House
Beautiful house with idyllic view over the Lake. We had a lovely time getting away from city life. Very good location for cycling as well.
TA - December 2021
Beautiful cottage in an idyllic setting. Very comfortable & stylish. Enclosed garden so great for dog lovers. Handy location for visiting coast or inland Northumberland. Highly recommend a stay and would definitely book again.
CC - October 2021
Beautiful accommodation in a peaceful and beautiful setting. We had a fantastic stay. Every thought has been given to the furnishing of the cottage and the bath is stunning! The hosts offer a warm welcome and are most helpful.
AC - October 2021
We had a lovely stay! Set in a beautiful location with plenty to see and do nearby. Perfect for the dogs and lot's of lovely walks!
MY - October 2021
Such a beautiful house. I could’ve happily stayed for a month. The bathtub is quite something.
JK - October 2021
One of the best places we've stayed in. Beautiful cottage in a great location for exploring Northumberland.
AS - September/October 2021
The School House
We had a lovely few days here, a good base for a wedding at Matfen Hall. The beds are very comfortable and the cottage spacious and well equipped. The enclosed garden was great for our small children to run and crawl around in. The location is very rural, quiet and peaceful.
LA - September 2021
Fabulous, so much to see in the surrounding areas. So clean.
JD - September 2021
Again a great find for us on our trips around the UK. Super well appointed cottage, quiet, clean, in a remote area but within easy driving distance of all the highlights of beautiful Northumberland. If it's discreet luxury and peace & quiet in a place all to yourself you're looking for, this is it!
RP - September 2021
What a place!! This was so much better than I had anticipated! The cottage is lovely and definitely ticked all the boxes for me. It was very peaceful despite being in a row of three cottages and is much larger than the pictures would suggest. The instructions and communication from the hosts were excellent and very clear. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and would definitely recommend it!
SM-W - September 2021
We thoroughly enjoyed our home away from home visit to the lakeside cottage, Alice. A perfect spot for peaceful breaks with plenty of on the doorstep walks for us with our two dogs. The cottage was a short drive from cafes and restaurants in Belsay and Ponteland. Contactless check in worked really well but the estate manager was on hand to support with answers to any questions if required. The log burner and smart tv was a welcome retreat each evening once tired legs returned from long walks! Very comfy beds and fabulous power shower or bathtub to choose from!
AM - September 2021
Fantastic cottage in an amazing location. Extremely peaceful and relaxing. The cottage was perfect and we couldn't fault it. Just the place to get away from it all.
GS - September 2021
Such a beautiful place to which we very much hope to return.
JR - September 2021
The School House
A great week - the cottage is very peaceful, set in a lovely rural situation. There is a well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, good bathroom with shower and bath (and plenty of hot water), and a spacious dining room. The sitting room with log burner is cosy for cooler evening and it is good to have off road parking in a designated space.
RH - September 2021
Lovely couples getaway, even with a couple of cottages around you would never know they were there with how peaceful it is. We messaged Willy & Eliza asking if we could access the gardens and within a few minutes we had a response, when we went into the gardens Willy came to introduce himself and explained the different areas we could go within the grounds. Would highly recommend!!
DS - August/September 2021
A fantastic cottage in Northumberland. Location for walking in Northumberland is great, easy access to the coast and Northumberland national park. Cottage is amazing inside, great care has gone into the design and build of it all. We'll definitely be back!
CH - August 2021
The School House
Quiet, comfortable house in beautiful countryside with plenty to see and do not too far away! Recommended.
CH - August 2021
The West Wing
Capheaton Hall is stunning. The West Wing is grand but homely and the garden and grounds are spectacular. Fresh garden produce from the magnificent walled garden was a real treat. Willy and Eliza were delightful hosts and their dogs are gorgeous!
SK - July 2021
The West Wing
We can't recommend this beautiful place highly enough. The house is lovely, the setting spectacular. The garden was stunning, in full bloom and highly scented. The views from the terrace (and some rooms indoors) are amazing, you would never get tired of drinking them in. The estate is lovely to wander around - they are rightly proud of the wonderful walled garden, but there are also woods, a folly, a lake and a tennis court. William and Eliza were very attentive and friendly hosts, but relaxed and never intrusive, and Louise was also extremely helpful. The resident dogs also provided bonus entertainment for the children! We can't wait to come back.

A wonderful time in a beautiful setting! A great spot to explore the area and relax with glorious views. Looking forward to returning soon!
The Furniss Family - June 2021
Had a great long weekend in Emily, the place is perfect. You could sit on the window seat all day looking out at the fields and beyond. Lovely walk around the lake. Bottle of Prosecco went down a treat, sat in the garden.
MG - June 2021
The Lakeside Cottages at Capheaton must be among the most wonderful and amazing places to stay in the UK. The cottages with their vaulted ceilings and very high quality furnishings and fittings were well beyond the normal holiday homes. If you are looking for tranquillity, beautiful sunsets, fabulous landscapes and excellent internet speeds then this is the place to visit. I just hope that there will still be availability for our next visit!
MW - May/June 2021
Beautifully decorated, very comfortable with a well fitted out kitchen. The welcome wine was very welcome and all the dog things were a very nice touch. The location was so peaceful but near enough to pubs/restaurants. Belsay Hall was great in the sunshine and only 10 mins away. We will be back!
SW - May/June 2021

Like being in a Jane Austen novel. What an incredible place and our family will remember it forever. Thoroughly recommended.

Expect a wonderful stay. The view from the dining area is stunning, get up at dawn! Highly recommend. So many Halls, including Capheaton, castles and beautiful gardens to visit in the area.
Name and address supplied - May 2021
We very much enjoyed our stay in this delightful cottage set in such a beautiful setting. The location meant we were in hitting distance of both the coast and Kielder Forest, so plenty to keep busy with. On arrival it was really nice to find a bottle of fizz and also some treats for the dogs. We would highly recommend this cottage to friends and family.
BW - May 2021
What a great weekend away! Unfortunately we only booked for 2 nights and we were gutted when we had to leave. The photos honestly don't do this place justice. The thoughtful touches such as dog bed, treats, prosecco were a lovely surprise! Situated in a lovely village in beautiful countryside it's really quite idyllic!
LH - May 2021
I couldn't have been happier with my stay in the Lakeside Cottage Edward. The only downside was I didn't book it for longer as there is an abundance of things to see and do in not only the surrounding areas but Capheaton itself too. The cottage is beautiful the interior design was simply incredible and clearly had a lot of thought and attention put into it, the pictures do not do it total justice, it has a cosy yet spacious feel combining the old with the new. It's hard to sum up just how astonishing this place was in just this review but I can say I will be booking again as soon as possible. Thank you to Willy and Eliza for giving us the best start to summer.
BB - May 2021
I write this review hesitantly - as I may not get a chance to book it again! In a word - HEAVEN. It was an absolute treat to stay in 'Alice', one of Willy's newly converted properties on the Estate. It felt a real privilege being 'first in' to the cottage (and also slightly daunting). We were very comfortable, and the beautiful interior and furnishings definitely enhanced our stay. From opening the back door and seeing the 'dog' box, complete with dog treats, to the enormous (and fabulous) map of the Northeast on the wall, from the bottle of white wine chilling in the fridge, even to the eco loo paper in the bathrooms; each little detail made us smile or confirm our decision that we'd found somewhere special to stay. The property lies in the middle of the Capheaton Estate, with stunning views down to the lake. The spring sunshine showed it all off to perfection, and the newborn lambs and calves were very friendly neighbours. This is a very special place to stay. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
KM - April 2021
By far the best cottage I've been in England, or maybe even Airbnb. Exceeded expectations on everything, we were welcomed with a clean and tidy house, with all amenities in place, and a bottle of Prosecco. Location is amazing, far from everything, definitely a place I would love to come back to.
AB - April/May 2021
We stayed in the Edward cottage. It has a lovely feel about it and is very spacious for two. Capheaton is a lovely quiet and peaceful small village with nice walks from the door step. Well worth a visit if you need some quiet time.
TC - April 2021
Exactly how it is in the photos and even more homely when you are there. Really detailed guest information file when you get there and lovely bottle of Prosecco as a treat in the fridge. Perfect stay!
JH - April 2021
Just returned from a wonderful relaxing stay in Capheaton. Edward is a fabulous cottage with every home comfort. Mrs L particularly enjoyed the huge copper bath. And lovely to meet Willy and Louise too.
Mr and Mrs L - April 2021
Idyllic scenery, outstanding location, thoughtful touches, fantastic cottage... couldn't really have asked for more... highly recommended we'll be back!
AB - April 2021
An immaculately clean, luxurious property finished to an outstanding standard. Beautiful designer kitchenware, interior design is elegant with lots of thoughtful touches, even our dogs had their own dog bed, toys and a tin of treats. The surrounding views from the front of the property overlook a stunning lake and from the rear of the property across fields. We enjoyed a walk around the gardens at the Hall and Jane the Head Gardener was very friendly and knowledgeable telling us of the history of Capheaton Hall and its gardens. We would highly recommend a stay in this property for its beautiful location and a hint of luxury.
GN - April 2021
Luxury, comfort, space and spectacular views... and the Tea Room nearby....
SY - April 2021
The West Wiing
Capheaton is heaven but also a haven! We had our first reunion with our family here after lockdown (we all received our test results of NEGATIVE the day before we set out.)
The West wing is big but still cosy and comfortable, with lovely beds and everything one needs to make one's stay as relaxing as possible.
The kitchen garden is a wonder, enormous with every conceivable vegetable and fruit tree including apricots and peaches. Jane, the head gardener is very knowledgeable and eager to chat about the plants and also shares the produce most generously.
The owners and their children were most welcoming and we enjoyed games of croquet and tennis and even snooker.
We were not blessed with good weather but we played games and read and watched the odd film in front of a blazing fire each evening so we didn’t feel deprived!
We will be most sad to leave but vow to return.
Mr and Mrs Glover - July 2020
Our stay at The West Wing, Capheaton Hall is one of my best vacations in 76 years. We travelled over 4000 miles from Florida, USA, to this idyllic magnificent estate. Willy and Eliza are most exceptional hosts/owners. The rolling beautiful countryside is peppered with castles, cathedrals, history, and everywhere we toured, ate, and visited we were greeted by the most sociable and caring people. What an honor it was to be able to slip back in time to Capheaton Hall and this historical part of the world and have the feeling of belonging.
Gwen and David - August 2019
What a great stay at the School House. Thought the communication was great up front, the property was exactly as advertised, everything was spotless and the house was extremely comfortable. Would recommend to others. And a bottle of wine and a cake on arrival - very thoughtful.
Steve - October 2019
Our week at The West Wing was the best holiday we have ever had. With access to the wider estate we had almost boundless local opportunities for fun and activities - from boating on the lake, to walks across the stunning parkland, to learning about plants and flowers in the kitchen garden (and lifting the odd vegetable for evening meals!). Willy and Eliza are perfect hosts and we left knowing so much more about the place and the people of the NE...…ask about JMWTurner residency in the West Wing, and also about Algernon Charles Swinburne poet, friend of Dante Rossetti, and the former's writings on cannibalism! Whilst in the area we explored an incredibly rich area of culture and recommend: Belsay Castle and its stunning and unorthodox garden quarry; Kielder Forest for its observatory; Barter Books at Alniwck; Lindisfarne for a good tourist experience; Bamburgh sands to escape the tourists in the dunes and have the best walk in England along the beachfront. We are coming back.
Duncan and Emily - August 2019
We have much enjoyed two family holidays at Capheaton's West Wing. The accommodation is spacious, elegant, and well equipped. We particularly enjoyed walks in the park, rowing on the lake, tennis, croquet, and the help of the gardener in providing fresh fruit and vegetables from the walled garden. The keyboard gave opportunity for playing and singing. We ventured out to a few nearby National Trust places during our first holiday, but in the second our only outings were to the nearby Waitrose. We spent all the rest of our time enjoying the estate and having time to read and cook: a very welcome rest from busy work schedules. Evening walks with the moon shining through the ruined folly in the garden were memorable.
Liz - August 2019
The School House is a beautiful house to stay in. Very Cosy with the log burners on and nice thick curtains. The kitchen was well equipped and clean. Lovely views out over the countryside from all rooms.
Helen - January 2020
We spent two nights in this lovely School House in October. Despite some horrible weather, the cottage was warm and cosy with ample comfortable bedding. The house is well equipped and finished to a good standard making if feel very homely for our short stay. What's more, the wonderful views out over the lake and it's quiet, picturesque location made it the perfect base for a relaxed family weekend in Northumberland.
Dorothy - October 2019
This is our 4th visit to The West Wing and we've had the most wonderful week. The kids have loved all the cycling and the freedom and playing with Peggy. We love it here, thank you Eliza and Will.
Bowdens, Leith, Menges - August 2018
We've had a wonderful week. The West Wing is lovely and provides a fantastic base for exploring Northumberland. Will definitely be back.
Muldoon - October 2018
A delightul place with delightful people. The West Wing has been carefully restored and is a cosy and comfortable hideaway. Both Jane and Louise were wonderful to speak with and our tour of the garden was a truly memorable treat. Thank you.
We too, explored the countryside and long walks but it is Capheaton Hall which will stay in our hearts, thanks to Eliza and Willy.
